About the story

At his right hand, she is more than an ornament. The court is watching.

Nefertari knows the tribute lists before the scribes have finished their accounts. Standing beside Ramesses in the audience hall, she brings judgment and skill to a position too many courtiers would prefer her to occupy silently.

In private, he values what she sees. Around them, small corrections and carefully phrased suggestions reveal how unwelcome a queen’s authority can be. A love shaped inside an empire must bear more than the weight of personal affection, and her absence will test what it means to keep someone beside you.

A historical romance imagining Nefertari and Ramesses amid the ceremonies, politics, and private negotiations of royal life in ancient Egypt.

Read a short excerpt

From the opening pages

The scribes had not finished grinding the ink before I arrived in the hall of audience, and I remember thinking, as I so often did in those early years, that this alone was a kind of victory—that I could stand at the pharaoh’s right hand while the sun had not yet climbed above the pylons, and that no one in that vast painted room would think to question why the Great Royal Wife had come before the petitioners themselves.
